The Challenge

ModernControls approached The Moving Company with an important scope of work—defining their internal culture and uniting their team. As an organization that provides HVAC and building automation services in the mid-Atlantic region, Modern’s team primarily works at different worksites every day. Although Modern’s workforce took pride in the work they did, they lacked interdepartmental cooperation and a culture statement to bring the team together. Modern’s CEO requested The Moving Company’s help crafting impactful engagement strategies.

The Process

Prior to engaging The Moving Company, Modern’s team took company culture surveys through Energage Consulting that identified three biggest areas for improvement:  Interdepartmental cooperation, Innovation, and Meaningfulness. The Moving Company laid out a plan that would address and improve those three areas. First, The Moving Company’s strategists distilled the company values and survey results into concise unifying statements for the team: 

“We pride ourselves on a dedication to customer service, superior craftsmanship, and fixing problems others can’t fix.”

“United by what we do and who we do it for, we are Modern.” 

Clearly defining ModernControls’ culture brought new meaningfulness and purpose to the dispersed team. 

The The Moving Company team presented a multifaceted Culture Activation Plan with steps such as creating more internal programs. To accomplish this, The Moving Company introduced the ModernControls Monthly Photo Contest. This requested that employees captured and shared a photo each month that demonstrated their commitment to expertise in craftsmanship, service, and technology. The photos reflected the pride employees take  in their work, customers, colleagues, and families. Each winner would be selected by the CEO and win a branded Yeti cooler. 

The activation plan included ways to show employee appreciation, suggesting each employee receive custom business cards to take to job sites, and elevated branded swag items for contests. In addition, there would be seasonal activation events such as a company-wide cookbook, Wawa Turkey Gobblers Lunch, back-to-school community donation campaign in a branded Modern school bus, and more.

The Moving Company team worked to promote the new culture plan through emails and social media, and ensured an in-person presence at their headquarters.

Problem Solved

The Moving Company generated organization-wide engagement and momentum within this scope. The culture activation plan renewed a sense of pride and unity at ModernControls, one that is visible through the wildly successful photo contest, uplifting Topping Off Event at their new headquarters, and improved client engagement and surveys.
