Changing the Way Children Play Chess

Client Chess at Three Provided Concept + Packaging + Gameboard + Characters + Instructional Book
Project Changing the Way Children Play Chess Year 2016
The Challenge

Chess at Three is a company that specializes in teaching children as young as three years old to play chess. Their unique, story based curriculum helps children learn chess piece movement and game strategy. The company needed help bringing a visual voice to their stories and first product—a custom system of characters and game components.

This chess set is unique in the fact that character pieces attach to the chess pieces to help the child master the game.

The Process

The process began with an initial research and problem-framing meeting with the client. To create a product that would be both appealing to a child and their parent, intensive market research was conducted to better understand the consumer.

Problem Solved.

The Chess at Three curriculum inspired a collection of products focused on bringing it to life throughout the characters, storybook and game components. The package is a representation of the world of chess that the company has created, with its quirky characters and thrilling adventures. The use of bright colors and engaging graphical elements help the standard box package stand apart from its competitors. This chess set is unique in the fact that character pieces attach to the chess pieces to help the child master the game. The attachment of the character to the chess piece aids in learning chess piece movement through-out the board.
