|Project Bringing the Dalai Lama to Newport||Year 2005|
At the personal request of Sister M. Therese Antone, RSM, President of Salve Regina University, Muhlenhaupt needed to assist with logistics for the appearance of His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet at Salve Regina in Newport in November 2005 where he would address more than 4000 students and guests. The Dalai Lama is transported solely on private aircraft while traveling within the United States. He and his entourage would be in Washington, DC immediately prior to his scheduled visit to Newport after which they needed transport to their next destination in Florida.
Sister Therese, a close personal friend of J. Brian O’Neill, knew that Rip Muhlenhaupt was her best hope to arrange the use of O’Neill’s aircraft for the flights into and out of Newport. Rip got to work first gaining O’Neill’s enthusiastic approval, then made all the necessary arrangements for the trips as well as for the attendance at the event for members of the O’Neill family (along with their personal audience with His Holiness), leaders of the O’Neill organization and select members of the Carnegie Abbey Club.
Luxury air transportation furnished on time, as planned. Event attendance, personal audience and all related logistics arranged without any concerns. In the end – for Rip who enjoyed a front-row seat for the event and all in attendance that chilly November day – an unforgettable afternoon with a larger-than-life world figure.
